MATCH REPORT: EXMOUTH TOWN 0-4 BEMERTON HEATH HARLEQUINS

Exmouth Town endured a tough night as they were soundly beaten 4-0 by Bemerton Heath Harlequins at the Circle of Care Community Stadium.

Two goals from Eder Teixeira Batista, as well as Brendan Holmes and Ryan Griffiths saw Town continue their winless league run, in a match where even the happiest person would struggle to find a positive from.

Exmouth had the first effort on goal as Harvey Field played the ball down the line to Levi Landricombe, but his shot was directly at Patrick Creese.

Town were able to have the better of the first 20, albeit without creating much, coming closest through Landricombe, but on two occasions a Bemerton Heath defender was there to prevent a clear effort.

The first half was affected by the wind, but not helped by a lack of quality from both sides, as they struggled to find their attacking rhythm.

There was a chance for the visitors ten minutes before the break, as Henry Lander was left completely unmarked from a corner, and luckily for Town, he headed wide.

The Harlequins would find the lead just seconds before the half time whistle, as the ball was played across goal and flicked home by Batista from close range.

Nothing happened in the first 15 minutes of the second half, but the next event was a goal for the visitors and it was a spectacular one as Holmes took aim from 40 yards out, and the ball flew over Robbie Powell and into the back of the net.

It should have been three, as Batista was found by James Ward and the striker got his effort all wrong.

With twenty minutes to go, it didn’t get any easier for Town, as Mike Landricombe was adjudged to have pushed Batista in the box, and the star of the evening secured his brace as his stutter-step penalty found the top left corner.

When Exmouth did have a rare foray forward during the game, they lacked a final ball to create anything clear cut and test the goalkeeper.

Bemerton Heath would compound the hosts’ misery, as subsitute Ryan Griffiths would find space in the box, and squeeze his effort past Powell.

Ben Steer tried to power Town towards a consolation goal, but after beating his man, Creese was able to save his effort and keep a clean sheet.

Exmouth will have to dust themselves down and go again, as they search for their first Southern League Division One South win, as they travel to Bishops Cleeve this Saturday.
