Two Tom Bath goals ensured Exmouth Town got their first win in 2024, as they beat Tavistock 2-0 at Langsford Park in the Southern League Division One South.

The strikers scored in both halves, including a penalty, in what was an excellent away performance from Town.

Two early tackles resulted in one yellow card apiece to start us off, with Ethan Slater booked for Town and Benjamin Fowles picking up a card for the hosts.

Aarron Denny would have the first real chance of the game, as Bath’s flick saw him blast the ball over the bar.

Nelson Iseguan was next to try his luck, as a throw in lead to Slater laying the ball off to the winger, but his low drive was wide of the goal.

Tavistock started to build their way into the game, and after Exmouth could not clear their lines, Dylan Jones had an opportunity but he completely mishit his shot.

Town would do something similar moments later, as a superb ball from Denny found Ben Steer, but as two players waited across the box, an unfortunate bobble took the ball into the side-netting.

Jack Endacott was a threat for the hosts down the left hand side, with him creating enough space to have two almost consecutive chances, but both times his attempts were no trouble for Chris Wright.

The visitors earned a free-kick through Callum Shipton, but Aaron Dearing was equal to Josh Cann’s low effort.

Exmouth were almost punished for falling asleep from a throw-in, as Alex Battle took aim, but his shot was straight at Wright, much to Town’s relief.

Just four minutes before the break, Exmouth would open the scoring, as Steer picked out Bath, who beat the offside trap and excellently slotted past Dearing to open the scoring.

Tavistock started the second half better, and it would take a superb save from Wright, who denied a deflected effort from Ed Harrison, which looked destined for the top corner.

Town started to grow into the second half, with Bath firing a shot over after linking up with Denny.

The game would slow down, with both sides almost having chances but not finding that important final ball to create anything clear cut.

That would change on the 72nd minute, as Denny was brought down in the box and the referee pointed to the spot.

Giving Town’s penalty record, you would be understandably pessimistic as Bath stepped up, but he ended the penalty drought by finding the bottom left corner.

Iseguan almost made it three after Slater inadvertently blocked Mike Landricombe’s shot and it fell to the winger, but his effort swerved over.

Tavistock would go down to ten men in added time as Alfie Cunningham received a straight red card for a poor challenge.

Exmouth would defend resiliently to hold onto their first clean sheet of the league season and earn a much needed victory.

Attention now turns to the 20th, where Town take on Bishops Cleeve at the Circle of Care Community Stadium.
