Assistant manager Andy Rawlings reflected on a difficult afternoon, where a mixture of a poor performance and bad luck saw Exmouth Town defeated 3-0 by Malvern Town at the HDAnywhere Community Stadium.

Two goals from Jack Platt and a free-kick from Matthew MacDonald meant all three points stayed in Malvern.

Speaking after the match, Rawlings said: “We came in with great hopes, after going a goal down in the first half we were looking for a reaction in the second, but the penalty is awarded and you are two down and it’s an uphill task.

I think after that penalty went in, it killed us off, we were flat.

At 0-0 we’ve had a good chance with Aarron Denny just trying to lift it over the keeper, but couldn’t quite get it, and goals win games and we didn’t take our chances today.

Decisions do turn games, and the penalty, Joe Belsten, who on his debut was fantastic today, has clearly got the ball, he’s in front of the player and he’s hooked it clear, but the lads came over on top of him and it’s a penalty, but we have to accept those.

Everybody is in at training on Wednesday, we are going to work on a few things, we’ve got a massive game next weekend against Bashley, no excuses, we have to go hard into that game, we can’t change today but we can do something about it next week.”

Exmouth have a must win game this Saturday as they welcome Bashley to the Circle of Care Community Stadium.
