MATCH REPORT: EXMOUTH TOWN 2-0 YATE TOWN
Exmouth Town played superbly to hand Yate Town their first Southern League Division One South defeat of the season, winning 2-0 at the Complete Infrastructure Stadium.
Mike Landricombe and Ben Griffith fired Town to victory in their best performance of the season so far.
The hosts started the game with plenty of energy, not allowing the Bluebells to play their possession based game.
Lloyd James had Yate’s first chance of the game, as a free-kick from 25 yards out forced Frankie Phillips into a superb save as the shot looked destined for the top corner.
Moments later, Town had their first effort, as Tom Bath pounced on a loose back pass and lunged at the ball but he could only divert it past the post.
Exmouth would open the scoring on the 17th minute, as Landricombe would find himself unmarked from a corner, and head past Aaron Sainsbury.
Yate would look to get back into the game and would get back into the game, but James failed to trouble Phillips with an effort on goal.
Exmouth would continue to defend brilliantly and stop the league leaders from getting any clear chances before the end of the half.
The hosts would start the second 45 with a big chance on goal, as Aarron Denny was slipped through on goal by Griffith, but he couldn’t quite get a shot on goal, as Lewis Hall made an important tackle.
Neither side were able to forge out many chances following that, with James Taylor getting close to a shot on goal as he ran from his own half to the Town box, until Callum Shipton made a superb tackle on goal.
Griffith had a shot on goal which Sainsbury had no trouble catching, but he would go one better with 16 minutes to go.
Nelson Iseguan would play in the striker, and he was able to work himself enough space to fire the ball under the goalkeeper.
Yate would try and get back into the game, but Town were excellent at the back, not allowing the Bluebells to create anything of note.
The closest they would come being a scramble from a corner which Denny made a crucial interception for.
Town will look to continue their momentum in the FA Trophy as they welcome Horndean to the Complete Infrastructure Stadium.
