MATCH REPORT: EXMOUTH TOWN 2-0 SHAFTESBURY
Exmouth Town extended their unbeaten run to five games as they beat Shaftesbury 2-0, at the Complete Infrastructure Stadium.
Goals from Callum Shipton and Tom Bath saw Town leave with three points, in a well-earned win against the Rockies.
Exmouth started the game on the back foot, as a loose header was pounced on by Harry McGrath, who forced Frankie Phillips into a good save to deny him.
The hosts had their first attempt on goal when Shipton found his header blocked, and Nelson Iseguan took aim, although that effort was also denied by the Shaftesbury defence.
Town were struggling to keep a hold of the ball in the opening exchanges, and if it wasn’t for a Karl Riddell block, the visitors could have found themselves leading.
They would continue to allow Exmouth to get away with the poor passing, as a counter attack led to Nathan Rogers firing wide.
The best chance for Shaftesbury did not end with a shot, as Jack Hoey’s low cross was just behind an unmarked Greg Peel, who could not get onto it.
Town finally took in the warning signs, and started to form some attacks in the Rockies half, with Bath receiving a long pass and cutting inside, before letting it fly, but the ball rolled wide.
Exmouth would take the lead after 25 minutes, when the striker excellently held up a long ball, to play in Isaac McCue, and his first time flick was perfectly into the path of Shipton, who chipped the goalkeeper to put the hosts in front.
The momentum was with Town, who put two consecutive shots off target, Bath and Ben Griffith the culprits.
Shaftesbury would end the half swinging, and if it wasn’t for a superb Mike Landricombe tackle, an equaliser could have been on the cards.
The second half struggled to get going, and Patrick Nolan firing over from long range was the closest we got to a chance in the first 15 minutes.
McCue, having got four assists in the last two, fancied a go on goal, and his low effort from just outside the box was blocked by a Shaftesbury man.
Shipton almost got his second of the game, when Bath picked up the ball out wide and crossed to Griffith, whose dummy led the ball to Iseguan, and he teed up the goal scorer, but he couldn’t keep his shot down.
With 14 minutes to go, Town would double their lead, as a corner found the near post run of Tom Bath and he brilliantly headed past Shane Murphy to seal the three points.
It should have been three for Exmouth, as Iseguan utilised his pace to chase down what looked a lost cause, before rounding Murphy and putting his shot into the side-netting.
Exmouth’s great form continues, in what was a tough yet comfortable game for the hosts, and they will look to keep the good times rolling, when they welcome Malvern Town to the Complete Infrastructure Stadium next Saturday.
