MATCH REPORT: EXMOUTH TOWN 2-1 CINDERFORD TOWN
Two first half goals made the difference for Exmouth Town, as they beat Cinderford 2-1 at the Complete Infrastructure Stadium, to make it two consecutive home wins.
Louis Morison and Tom Bath found the back of the net from set-pieces, with Joseph Keeping getting Cinderford back in it before half time, but Town were able to grind out the win.
Exmouth got off to the perfect start, as Ollie Knowles’ free kick was directed straight at an unmarked Morison, and he headed in past the goalkeeper.
The momentum stayed with the hosts, as Tom Bath played Steer through on goal, but the winger couldn’t get his shot on target.
With just over 20 minutes gone, another free-kick would further Town’s advantage, with Knowles setting up Steer, whose cross was perfect for the run of Bath, and his header flew into the back of the net.
It could have been all over very early on, as Ben Vine cleared the ball against himself, which saw Tor Swann burst through on goal, unfortunately, the striker was unable to mark his full debut with a goal as he fired wide.
Cinderford kept going, and starting to gain a foothold back in the game towards half-time, with Frankie Phillips being forced into action as Isaac Richards had a strike travel through a crowd of bodies.
The visitors were able to get back in it before half time, as a long ball ended up being squared across to Joseph Keeping, and he made no mistake.
Exmouth would start the second half looking to get back into it, as a Callum Shipton volley was saved by Smallcombe.
Cinderford will have experienced centre-back Ismail Yakubu to thank for the score staying at 2-1, as Bath teed up Steer, and the defender threw himself at the ball, receiving it straight in the face to deny a goal.
While Exmouth felt relatively comfortable in the game, their was a looming threat from the visitors, who reminded Town they were in a game when Marley Thomas took aim from range, although the shot was easy for Phillips.
Vine, who had picked up a booking on the 72nd minute, received his marching orders three minutes later, as he was adjudged to have fouled Steer on the edge of the box.
Town did have the ball in the back of the net with eight minutes to go, after Morison’s free-kick was saved and it fell to Bath, with the striker being ruled offside just as Swann bundled home.
As fog descended upon the Complete Infrastructure Stadium, there would be one more scare right at the death for Town, with Hundt’s deflected effort being pounced on by Phillips, as it edged towards his goal.
It was not an electric display from Town, but a resilient display in tough conditions, with two wins this week putting Exmouth in a good place before they head to Silver Street to take on Willand Rovers, this Saturday.
