Exmouth Town’s historic season came to an end at the Spiers & Hartwell Stadium, as they were beaten 4-1 by Evesham United in the Southern League Division One South play-off semi-final.

Ben Griffith opened the scoring for Town with a brilliant long-range effort, but two quickfire second-half goals from Levi Steele and Lewis Middleton put the Robins in front.

As Exmouth poured players forward, the hosts became more dangerous on the break, with Andre Wright and a second Middleton goal added to a tough second half.

The opening 10 minutes were a familiar sight for anyone who had been to any of the previous Evesham vs Exmouth games, with neither team able to create anything of note.

It was the visitors who had the first big chance on goal, as Jack Thorne played a pass which matched the run of Ace High, but Town’s number nine sent his effort wide.

Evesham started to gain momentum and forced Frankie Phillips’ to punch the ball clear on multiple occasions.

Town would regain momentum and have another great chance to open the scoring, as Aarron Denny got the better of Jordy N’Gathe, before striking the woodwork with a low effort.

Evesham, who were struggling to turn their crosses into anything substantial, had their first big opportunity to break the deadlock thanks to a N’Gathe pass to Aaron Heap, but the winger rushed his shot and fired straight at Phillips.

Exmouth would get a goal before the break, as Griffith received the ball from 30-yards-out and fired towards goal, with the ball hitting the post and rolling into the back of the net.

The hosts would make a switch before the hour mark, and that would make the difference for the Robins, as they levelled the game up thanks to a close range effort from Steele.

That would very quickly turn into two for Evesham, as they capitalised on their momentum, with Middleton firing past Phillips.

It never really got going for Exmouth after that, with a Griffith half-volley being the closest they got to a chance on goal.

A long-throw in would help Evesham find a third, as it fell to Wright, and his shot was near enough unstoppable as it nestled into the top corner.

As Town looked for a way back into the game, the hosts became even more dangerous on the break, and Middleton took advantage, with one ball being enough to see him through against Phillips, before slotting past the goalkeeper.

It was not to be for Town, but they can hang their heads high after a record-breaking season in the Southern League Division One South.
