Exmouth Town earned their first point of the Southern League Division One South season, with a 0-0 draw away against Melksham Town, at the Meads of Melksham Community Football Stadium.

Both sides threatened to break the deadlock, but in the end there nothing to split the two teams.

It was the hosts who started the stronger, with plenty of possession going the way of Mark Collier’s side.

Melksham would have a penalty shout, with Josh Bennett’s volley hitting a Town player, as the home side claimed for a spot-kick.

Jamal Lawrence would be next up to try his luck, but his overhead kick went wide of the mark.

Devanti McInerney would cause Town problems down the wing, linking up with Jack Carter to pick out Ralph Graham, who headed wide.

Matt Wright would have a header on target, but could not generate the power to truly test Adam Forster.

Archie Milne would have a shot blocked by the Town defence, and Callum Shipton would follow down the other end, seeing his shot deflect wide.

Lawrence would come close to opening the scoring just before the break, but a vital Mike Landricombe block sent his effort wide.

Ollie Knowles had a promising opportunity from a free-kick to start the second half, but he got his set-piece all wrong.

Town would consider themselves lucky not to give away a penalty, as Sam Morcom was caught on the wrong side of Olly Mehew, but nothing was given.

McInerney and Christopher would see their shots blocked and saved respectively, before Aaron Dearing made a superb stop to deny Graham’s close range header.

Ed Butcher would look to make an impact off the bench, and found himself in a good position to head Town in front, although the bounce was awkward for the winger, and it was sent wide.

Some great link-up play between Wright and Ben Griffith, ended up with Butcher getting on the end of it, but he misjudged the finish and sent it into Forster’s hands.

The substitute would force the goalkeeper into a much better save just before the final whistle, finding himself in space to deliver a powerful low drive, which was met by the Melksham stopper.

It was a good point on the road for Town, who will look to build on that on Bank Holiday Monday, as they play Bristol Manor Farm at the Complete Infrastructure Stadium.
