Match Report: Exmouth Town 2-1 Shaftesbury
Exmouth Town showed that they were no pushovers as they beat Shaftesbury 2-1 at the Complete Infrastructure Stadium, as they make it four Southern League Division One South wins in a row.
Goals from Matt Wright and Callum Shipton had Town ahead, and whilst a Harry Baker goal pushed the Rockies back into the game, the hosts were able to withstand the pressure to get all three points.
The game started off end-to-end, with corners for both teams. Wright would have his first effort of the game, as he floated a header towards goal which was collected by Ben Taylor.
Shaftesbury would come close when Harry Baker was left unmarked in the box, but a miscommunication between the Rockies’ attack would see his header claimed by Chris Wright.
Town would open the scoring after 15 minutes, as Sam Morcom’s cross bounced in the box and Wright was able to get ahead of Taylor, before turning and firing into the back of the net.
Shaftesbury would press for an equaliser, as a drilled cross looked perfect for Baker, but fortunately for the hosts, he missed the ball.
Exmouth would win a free-kick around 20 yards from goal, and Ollie Knowles would force a decent save from Taylor with his subsequent set-piece.
Ben Griffith attempted to catch the goalkeeper off-guard with a quick snapshot from the edge of the box, but it was well-read.
Town perhaps should have made it two just before the break, as Wright slipped the ball through to Aarron Denny, but his low shot was saved by the legs of Taylor.
After the break, Ben Steer continued to threaten down the left hand side, pushing into the box, with just the final shot letting him down.
It would not matter though, as moments later Exmouth would extend their lead, as a long-ball was kept alive by Denny, and he calmly squared to Shipton, who skipped past his man and slotted past Taylor.
The Rockies needed a goal to get back into the game, and Wright made a good stop to prevent a counter-attack leading to a goal.
They would find the goal they needed, as their corner was cleared by Town, but quickly returned into the box and flicked on to the head of Baker, who headed home from close range.
Exmouth were forced into some fantastic last-ditch defending, as both Knowles and Mike Landricombe made important tackles to stop Toby Holmes.
Holmes would trouble the Town backline, skipping past his man before aiming an effort straight at Wright.
Joe Belsten’s switch pass to Luke Steer almost gave Town a winner, as he laid the ball back to Denny, although his shot was charged down by the visitors defence.
Shaftesbury would push for an equaliser, but the resolute Town backline were able to stay strong, and see the game out.
Exmouth will look to keep their unbeaten Southern League Division One South run going, as they head to Langsford Park to take on Tavistock next Saturday.
