Exmouth Town got back to winning ways in the Southern League Division One South as they beat Didcot Town 2-1 at the Complete Infrastructure Stadium.

It was a hard-fought game, but goals from Ethan Slater and Ben Steer helped Town to victory, with Cameron Mills scoring for the visitors.

Didcot got off to a fast start, putting the returning Aaron Dearing under pressure and forcing a punch, with Dylan Conlan heading over.

Exmouth would start to build their way into the game, and a quick passing move saw the ball fall to Ben Griffith have an effort from the edge of the box, with Leigh Bedwell level to it.

Town would get themselves in front when Steer’s recovered quickly from a fall in the box, to reverse the ball through to Slater, and he calmly slotted home.

When the hosts did get forward, they were able to string together some good attacking moves, with Luke Steer and Slater linking up to force an awkward clearance across the box.

Town had an early chance in the second half, but having done a lot of the hard work in the build-up, Steer’s finish struck the side-netting.

Mills, who had threatened two minutes prior with a long-shot, levelled the game up, as he put his pace to good use to get in behind the Town defence, and his powerful strike left Dearing with no chance.

The goalkeeper was able to deny the winger a second goal, as Mills breached the home defence once again, forcing Dearing into a superb one-on-one stop.

Didcot looked the most likely to get a winner, with Paul John having an effort from the edge of the box, which was met by the Town goalkeeper.

Against the run of play, Ace High picked the ball up and flew down the right hand-side, before teeing Steer up to put the hosts in front.

From there, Exmouth were able to deal with the Didcot pressure and see out the game, for their first win in six games.

Town face a tough challenge away from home on Tuesday, as they head to league leaders Portishead Town.
