Exmouth Town were narrowly defeated by 10-men play-off hopefuls Winchester City in a back and forth game at Southern Road.

The visitors started fastest and almost raced in the lead two minutes in, but for a smart intervention from Town keeper Chris Wright.

Three minutes later, it was Town who raced into the lead, after Aarron Denny prodded home, profiting from a goalmouth scramble which the visitors failed to clear.

The game fell into a period of calm after a frantic start, and the visitors levelled the score just when they had started to assert their dominance, with Tom Bragg finishing off a clever free kick routine for City.

The second half started as frantically as the first and the visitors were reduced to ten-men just three minutes into it when captain Luke King was sent off for denial of a goalscoring opportunity.

Despite the red card, it was the visitors who looked most likely to take the lead and they did so just after the hour mark when Olly Balmer pounced on a defensive mistake at the back and set up Brad Waters who finished coolly past Chris Wright in the town goal.

Town threw bodies forward in search of an equaliser but it was City who still looked most dangerous, with Balmer missing a guilt -edged opportunity after another defensive mix-up at the back from the hosts.

Town couldn’t breakdown a resilient and motivated Winchester backline and the visitors saw the game out comfortably to keep themselves in the all important play off positions with one match to play

Town can still have a say in the play off race as they travel the Shaftesbury on the final day of the season, who occupy the final play off spot a point behind Winchester.

Line-Up: C.Wright, Cann (Shipton, 58), Morcom, Edwards, Landricombe, Knowles, Denny, Griffith (High, 71), Belsten, Steer (Akingbade, 78), M.Wright (Bath, 46).
