Match Report: Shaftesbury 4-4 Exmouth Town
Exmouth Town ended their 25/26 Southern League Division One South season with a spirited 4-4 draw against play-off bound Shaftesbury, at Cockrams.
Having gone behind on three occasions, Town showed plenty of heart to ensure they finished the season on a high.
It was a poor start from the visitors, who were caught asleep at the back as Toby Holmes was able to get in behind, before calmly slotting past Aaron Dearing.
Shaftesbury would continue to dominate the ball, but it was Town who responded quickly, as a high press saw Exmouth win possession in the home half, and it fell it Ben Griffith, who rolled the ball into the bottom corner.
The home side, who knew a win could potentially secure them a home play-off fixture, would push to get ahead, forcing Dearing into a good save, as a floated ball headed towards the far post.
As we approached half-time, the Rockies would get themselves in front, as Jack Hoey picked the ball up on the edge of the box, before his effort deflected into the back of the net.
The hosts dominated possession, but were unable to create any extra chances heading into half time.
Town, clearly motivated after the break, would push for an equaliser, using their defensive shape to their benefit.
This would prove successful just five minutes later, as a counter attack, started by Josh Cann, would see the ball played down to Sam Morcom, and his cross would pick out Griffith who smashed the ball into the back of the net.
Shaftesbury would respond quickly, as Holmes received the ball in the box, before backheeling to James Ollis, and he calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net.
Exmouth would start to rally again, with Tom Bath striking the post following another Town counter-attack.
You would be forgiven for thinking Town had thrown in the towel after the fourth Shaftesbury goal, as they were able to switch the ball at will before feeding it to Cameron Beard, who finished past Dearing.
The visitors would respond sharply, as Griffith turned provider, laying the ball just behind Callum Shipton, who curled the ball into the bottom left corner.
Town would push for a winner, as Bath, who had done everything but score, forced an excellent save from Ben Taylor, denying him from close range.
Exmouth would get the equaliser they deserved, as Aarron Denny kept the ball alive from a set-piece, as floated it across to Ross Edwards, who glanced the ball home.
Both teams pushed for a winner in the closing stages, but neither were able to fashion a real chance on goal.
This result sees Town secure an eighth placed finish, in what has been a solid season in the Southern League.
