Match Report: Cullompton Rangers 2-4 Exmouth Town
Exmouth Town battled to their first win of pre-season, as a good second half performance saw them beat Cullompton Rangers 4-2 at Adopstar Park.
After going into the second half behind, goals from Tom Bath, Alfie Cunningham, Andrew Ellis and Ben Steer led Town to victory.
Exmouth got off to a solid start, maintaining possession and creating half-chances, as Steer was inches away from tapping in a low Joe Belsten cross.
Steer would then look to set Matt Wright up, but his shot was sent wide of the post.
Cullompton started to grow into the game and capitalised on a mistake at the back, as they pounced on a loose pass but struck the bar with their following effort.
The hosts would then take the lead, as a shot from outside the box was parried by Matt Wonnacott and it fell into the path of an attacker who finished from close range.
The goal was initially disallowed, but after a long discussion between the referee and linesman, it was given.
Exmouth were not at the level required in the first half, but immediately looked to put that right in the second, as Wright teed the ball up to Bath, and he struck it into the bottom corner.
Provider almost turned into goalscorer, as an inquisitive low cross looked perfect for Wright, but he was just behind it.
Cullompton got themselves back ahead as an attacker picked up the ball outside the box, before sailing past two defenders with ease and his low effort headed directly for the bottom right corner.
Town would up the intensity, searching for an equaliser as Steer squared the ball to an unmarked Alex Kraus, but his shot was well-blocked by a home defender.
However, the following corner proved fruitful for Town, as it fell to Cunningham on the edge of the box, and his shot took a wicked deflection to beat the Cullompton goalkeeper.
Exmouth would find their winner seven minutes later, as an Ethan Slater shot was saved but fell straight to Ellis, and he tapped in from close range.
Just like Cullompton’s first goal, it was initially disallowed, another discussion led to the goal being given.
Town would wrap the game up as a long-ball from Belsten was perfect for the run of Steer, as his delicate lob floated over the goalkeeper and bounced into the back of the net.
It was a much better second half from Exmouth, who will next welcome Tavistock to Southern Road this Tuesday.
Squad List: Wonnacott, Belsten, Cann, Knowles, Landricombe, Rowe, Knowles, Kraus, Shipton, Denny, Steer, Cunningham, Wright, Akingbade, Ellis, Slater, Bath.
